Architectural Gems Right Here!

When thinking of cities with architectural appeal, Sarasota might not be the first that comes to mind, but it should be!  Our city boasts a rich history of architectural achievement, mostly characterized by the mid-century trend, Sarasota Modern (aka the Sarasota School of Architecture), which blended modern designs with Florida-friendly details like walls of glass, shade from the sun, and ventilation.  Many of our community buildings, such as Sarasota High School (a Paul Rudolph design), City Hall (a Jack West design), and our own South Gate Community Center (a Victor Lundy design), are the works of local modernist architects.  Many of our amazing private residences in Sarasota feature stunning mid-century, coastal contemporary, and Sarasota Modern influences.  Let's take a look at a few of our favorites...

A true Sarasota School of Architecture gem, this eye-catching home was designed by two original members, Jack West & Elizabeth Boylston Waters, in 1960.  The Round House is just that, a circular home set on two lots with a third buildable lot included.  The simply massive open living space features glass walls soaring up two stories and a balcony overlooking it all from the second floor.  The modern-style kitchen is clean white, enhancing the light and bright downstairs space.  If you are on the market for a true piece of Sarasota architecture, this one should have your eye.
